Two corridors that share a name

“California to Nevada” is really two separate markets. The southern lane runs from Los Angeles, the Inland Empire and San Diego up Interstate 15 to Las Vegas and Henderson. The northern lane runs from the Bay Area and Sacramento over Interstate 80 to Reno, Sparks and Carson City. They are quoted by different crews, cross different terrain and peak at different times of year, so a price you saw for one tells you little about the other.

The northern lane crosses Donner Summit. Between late autumn and spring, chain controls and closures on Interstate 80 can push a delivery back by a day or more. A carrier that promises a fixed winter delivery date to Reno without mentioning weather is either very confident or not telling you everything. Ask how they handle a closed pass and whether a weather delay changes your bill.

Why a short move is not proportionally cheaper

This is one of the shortest interstate lanes people move on, and that surprises a lot of shoppers. Halving the distance of a cross-country move does not halve the price, because a large share of the cost is fixed: the crew’s hours loading at origin, unloading at destination, the truck’s day out of service and the paperwork that every interstate shipment carries. On a 300 mile move those fixed costs are most of the bill. That is why a 2 bedroom move to Las Vegas can cost more than half of what the same household pays to go to Texas.

It also explains why the cheapest option here, renting a truck and driving it yourself, saves so much more in percentage terms than it does on a long haul. At $550 to $1,400, a rental truck is a realistic choice on this route for people who can recruit help at both ends.

What the migration data says

Census estimates for July 2024 to June 2025 show California with net domestic migration of minus 229,077, the largest loss of any state, and Nevada with plus 14,914. United Van Lines’ 2025 study classifies Nevada as a high inbound state: 57 percent of its tracked moves were coming in. Heavy one-way flow means carriers often run back to California with less freight, and that empty leg is priced into the outbound quote.

What moves the price on this route

  • California origin labor. Crew rates in California’s coastal metros are among the highest in the country, and on a short lane labor is the biggest single line.
  • Access at both ends. Apartment buildings and permit parking in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and gated master-planned communities with HOA rules around Las Vegas and Henderson, both add time.
  • Summer heat in southern Nevada. Crews in Las Vegas work early in summer, which narrows delivery windows. If your delivery slot is an afternoon in July, expect the schedule to move.
  • Winter on Interstate 80. Reno-bound moves in the snow months carry schedule risk that Las Vegas moves do not.
  • Who is actually doing the move. Short interstate lanes attract local California companies that also hold interstate authority. That is fine, but confirm the USDOT number on the estimate belongs to the company that shows up.

Check a quote

Before you compare on price

A quote far below the bottom of the range above usually means something is missing: valuation, a stair or long carry charge, or a second trip for overflow. Ask what is excluded before you celebrate. Run every company through the six verification checks, and know whether your estimate is binding, non-binding or binding not-to-exceed. Interstate rules apply even to a move of 220 miles, including your right to a written estimate and to choose your valuation coverage.
