Movers, Containers or a Rental Truck: Cost Compared
Three ways to move a household across the country, at very different prices and very different amounts of your own labor. For a 2 to 3 bedroom move: full service movers $3,800 to $8,000, a moving container $3,000 to $4,500, a rental truck $2,000 to $3,200.

The price ladder tracks exactly one thing: how much of the work you keep. There is no clever option that is both cheap and effortless.
The costs people forget
Rental truck quotes are the least comparable, because the advertised daily rate is a fraction of the real total. Budget for fuel on a vehicle doing single-digit miles per gallon, one-way drop fees, mileage, insurance, tolls, and hotels for a multi-day drive. A cross-country truck rental frequently lands much closer to container pricing than the headline rate suggests.
Container quotes are more honest but still exclude loading labor if you hire help at either end, and storage if the container sits waiting.
When each one wins
- Full service. Short notice, a corporate relocation paying, physical limitations, or a household large enough that self-loading is unrealistic. Also the only option where someone else carries liability for damage.
- Container. Flexible timing, a driveway to park it in, and a willingness to load. The sweet spot for most cost-conscious long-distance moves, and it doubles as storage.
- Rental truck. Smaller loads, a shorter route, help available, and no back problems. The saving is real but so is the driving.
The hybrid nobody mentions
You can rent a container and hire local labor to load it at origin and unload at destination. That removes the hardest part of the container option while keeping most of the saving, and it usually costs a few hundred dollars per end. Compare that against the full service gap before ruling it out.
Liability, which is the real difference
With full service movers, federal rules on valuation coverage apply and there is a formal claims route. With a container, the company transports the box and their liability for the contents you packed is limited. With a rental truck, damage to your own belongings is entirely yours.
That is worth pricing. Saving $2,000 is a different proposition if it means carrying the risk on everything you own.
