Long-Distance Moving Cost in 2026

A long-distance move costs $1,500 to $16,000 depending on how much you are moving. A 2 bedroom move of 1,000 miles or more typically lands between $3,800 and $5,600. A 3 bedroom typically lands between $5,500 and $8,000.

What these figures cover

Door to door price for an interstate move of 1,000 miles or more: transport, loading, unloading, basic released valuation and fuel surcharge. Before packing services, storage, specialty items and any deposit.

Most published moving prices do not say whether packing, storage or valuation coverage are in them, which is why the internet cannot agree on what a move costs. Our full definition and its limits are on the method page.

How interstate pricing actually works

This is the single most useful thing to understand, and most cost guides get it wrong by mixing two different pricing models.

  • Local moves are billed by the hour, usually per mover plus a truck fee. Distance barely matters.
  • Interstate moves are billed on weight and distance. The crew hours are already inside that number.

So on a long-distance move, the lever that moves your price most is how much stuff weighs, not how long the crew works. That is why decluttering before the estimate is worth real money, and why an estimate given without anyone surveying your belongings is a guess that will be revised.

What pushes a quote up

Factor Why it costs
Packing services Full packing is labor and materials, quoted separately and often the largest add-on
Peak season May to September is high season, with the end of the month worst of all
Stairs and long carries A long carry fee applies when the truck cannot park close to the door
Shuttle service When a full-size trailer cannot reach the property, a smaller truck ferries the load
Storage in transit Charged when delivery is delayed by your schedule, not theirs
Specialty items Pianos, safes, gun cabinets, large aquariums and vehicles
Full value protection Real insurance coverage rather than the basic released valuation included by default

Basic released valuation is included in every quote by federal default and it is close to worthless: it pays by weight, not by what the item is worth. Full value protection costs extra and is a genuine decision, not an upsell to dismiss automatically.

How to bring the price down

  1. Move less. On interstate pricing, weight is the bill. Selling or donating before the survey converts directly into dollars.
  2. Avoid peak dates. Mid-month, mid-week, outside summer. The same load can differ by hundreds.
  3. Pack yourself. Boxes you pack are boxes you are not paying to have packed, though the mover’s liability changes for those cartons.
  4. Be flexible on delivery window. A wider window is cheaper than a guaranteed date.
  5. Get three in-home or video surveys. Phone quotes are placeholders.

What a normal spread looks like

For the same load and route, quotes commonly land within 25% of each other. A quote far below the others is the warning sign, not the bargain: the lowball that rises on delivery day is the most common pattern in moving complaints. Before you choose on price, run the company through the checks on our mover verification page.

Cost on specific routes

Route level ranges, each triangulated from independent sources for that corridor: California to Texas, New York to Florida, Illinois to Texas, California to Arizona and New Jersey to North Carolina. More in cost by route.

Common questions

Should I get a binding estimate?

A binding estimate fixes the price for the inventory listed. A non-binding one can change based on actual weight. Which you have determines what you can be charged at delivery, and it is covered on our quotes and estimates page.

Is a moving container cheaper?

Usually yes on price and more expensive in your own labor, since you load it. See movers, containers and DIY compared.

How far ahead should I book?

Six to eight weeks for a summer move, less off season. Booking late in peak season removes your negotiating position entirely.
