Why the spread on this route is so wide

The full range here runs from $2,500 to $8,800, wider than most routes of similar length. Two things drive that. The first is the origin: a suburban house in Worcester County and a third-floor apartment in a Boston triple-decker are very different jobs, even when they hold the same furniture. The second is the destination: Jacksonville is several hundred miles closer than Miami or Naples, and the published data shows it.

Massachusetts lost 33,340 residents through net domestic migration between July 2024 and June 2025, according to Census estimates, and United Van Lines’ 2025 study recorded about 55 percent of its tracked Massachusetts moves as outbound. Florida is one of the most common destinations, which keeps the lane busy and competitive.

The September 1 problem

A large share of Boston-area leases turn over on September 1, and the days around it are the busiest of the year for local moving crews and truck rentals. Long-distance carriers feel it too, because they rely on the same local labor for loading. If you can avoid the last week of August and the first week of September, do. If you cannot, book early and expect less flexibility on price.

Boston also requires a street occupancy permit to reserve curb space for a moving truck. Some movers arrange it as part of the job and some expect you to. Ask, because a truck with nowhere to park means a longer carry or a shuttle, and both cost money.

What moves the price on this route

  • Origin access. Narrow streets, stairs in older buildings and parking permits in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville are the most common reasons a quote rises after a survey.
  • Florida destination. North Florida is meaningfully cheaper to reach than the southern peninsula. Condo elevators, HOA delivery rules and gated communities add time at the other end.
  • Season and direction. Southbound demand builds through autumn as households time their move before winter. Spring and early summer can be easier to book on this lane.
  • Hurricane season. From June through November, storm warnings can hold deliveries into Florida. Read the contract for what a weather delay costs you.

Check a quote

Before you compare on price

Many households on this lane are moving a lifetime of furniture, and the cheapest quote is usually the one that assumes the least. Make sure the estimate is based on a real survey of what you own, decide deliberately between full value protection and released value, and run the company through the six verification checks.
