Moving against the current
Most routes on this site follow the big migration flows. This one runs partly against them. Texas gained 67,299 residents through net domestic migration between July 2024 and June 2025, while Colorado recorded a loss of 12,100, its first negative year since 2004 according to the state demographer. United Van Lines’ 2025 study also recorded more moves out of Colorado than into it, about 55 percent outbound.
For you, that can be good news. When fewer households are heading into a state, carriers have more reason to want freight going that way, because it saves them running in partly empty. That does not guarantee a discount, but it is a reason to push back on a quote that looks high for the distance.

Front Range or mountains
The ranges above are for the Front Range: Denver, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and the suburbs between them. A move into a mountain town is a different job. Steep, narrow roads and driveways often cannot take a full-size trailer, which means a shuttle truck and a second handling of everything you own. Winter adds chain laws and closures on Interstate 70. If your destination is above the foothills, expect a meaningfully higher quote and ask for the shuttle charge in writing before you sign.
What moves the price on this route
- Origin city. Houston to Denver is roughly 300 miles farther than Amarillo or Lubbock to Denver, and Austin and Dallas sit in between. Compare quotes for the same pair of cities.
- Summer heat in Texas. Crews load early in summer. A late-morning start in July or August is slower and sometimes rescheduled.
- Mountain access. Shuttles, long carries and steep driveways at destination are the most common surprise charges on Colorado deliveries.
- Season. Summer is peak for both states. Early autumn often offers better availability before mountain weather becomes a factor.
Check a quote
Before you compare on price
Ask every company whether its estimate includes destination access charges, because those are where Colorado quotes grow. Make sure the estimate is based on a survey of your belongings, run the carrier through the six verification checks, and know which type of estimate you are signing.
