A true long haul
This is the longest route on this site. At around 2,000 miles, distance and fuel make up a much larger share of the bill than they do on mid-length moves, and the gap between full-service and doing it yourself widens in dollars even as the percentages stay similar. Published data on this lane puts containers at roughly 30 percent below full-service and rental trucks at around 60 percent below. On a long haul, though, a rental truck means four or five days of driving, fuel, motels and meals, so the real saving is smaller than the sticker gap.
Which Texas city you are heading to changes the distance by several hundred miles. Seattle to Dallas is shorter than Seattle to Houston, and Spokane to El Paso is a different trip again. Compare quotes for the same destination, not for “Texas”.
Direction of travel
Census estimates for July 2024 to June 2025 show Texas gaining 67,299 residents through net domestic migration and Washington gaining 9,238, a small positive after several years of losses. United Van Lines’ 2025 study recorded slightly more moves out of Washington than into it, about 52 percent outbound. Texas pulls households from almost every state, which helps carriers find loads into Texas and is one reason this lane is priced more evenly than its length might suggest.

What moves the price on this route
- Mountain passes in winter. Routes out of western Washington cross the Cascades, and winter conditions on the passes can delay pickup or departure. Ask how the carrier handles weather holds.
- Seattle area access. Steep driveways, narrow streets and apartment buildings with loading rules are common, and each adds labor time.
- Fuel. On a 2,000 mile haul the fuel surcharge is a significant line, and it moves with diesel prices. Check whether your estimate fixes it or leaves it open.
- Consolidation. Nearly all shipments on a lane this long travel with other households. That keeps the price down and makes the delivery window wide. If you need a firm date, guaranteed delivery costs extra.
- Texas heat. Summer delivery in Texas means early starts and short working afternoons for crews, which can push a delivery into the next day.
Storage between homes
Long hauls often come with a gap between leaving one home and getting the keys to the next. Storage-in-transit lets the carrier hold your goods near the destination, but it is billed by the day and has a time limit after which your shipment converts to permanent storage and the carrier’s liability ends. Federal rules require written notice before that conversion. Know the date before you agree to it.

Before you compare on price
The longer the haul, the more leverage a dishonest mover has once your goods are on the truck. Learn the red flags, run each company through the six verification checks, and understand how your shipment will be weighed, because on a weight-based estimate every extra hundred pounds is billed at long-haul rates.
